Goal: To translate complex climate research into a visually grounded, human-centered narrative — helping audiences understand how coastal wetlands quietly shape the carbon balance of our planet through clear, emotionally accessible storytelling.
Context: The science behind carbon sequestration is often communicated through data, terminology, and technical reports — making it difficult for broader audiences to grasp the scale and importance of the work happening in places like Elkhorn Slough. Researchers were studying greenhouse gas exchange across restored and undisturbed wetlands, using advanced measurement systems to understand how wetlands store carbon and when they may release gases like methane. The challenge was to preserve scientific integrity while creating a story that felt immediate, human, and visually compelling.
Narrative Angle: In addition to explaining the science in accessibly, grounded terms for the audience, the film illustrates the relationship the researchers have with the landscape, their fascination with the slough’s functional connectivity with the atmosphere, and the sense of play that emerges in being physically and intellectually connected with nature.
The narrative follows researchers working quietly within the landscape — showing science as an act of observation, patience, and stewardship rather than abstraction.
Creative / Visual Strategy
The visual language was intentionally calm and immersive — mirroring the pace and atmosphere of the wetlands themselves.
Key creative decisions included:
Emphasizing texture, light, and natural rhythm over heavy graphics
Grounding technical concepts through human presence and field work
Capturing timelapses to compress timelines of intertidal zones and illustrate the slough’s respiration-like fluctuation.
Using wide environmental compositions balanced with intimate moments of data collection to juxtapose the human element with the vast natural space.
The goal was to make complex research feel tangible without reducing its nuance.
Cultural / Audience Intent
To help viewers understand climate science not as distant theory, but as something happening in real landscapes with real people — shifting perception from abstract environmental anxiety toward curiosity and connection.

Creative Reflection
This project reinforced a lesson that has shaped much of my work: audiences rarely connect with information first—they connect with stories. While the science behind blue carbon is both rigorous and compelling, the creative challenge was finding a narrative approach that made the subject accessible without oversimplifying it. By focusing on the researchers, the landscape, and the surprising ways tidal marshes quietly support climate resilience, the film became less about explaining a scientific process and more about helping viewers see a familiar environment in an entirely new way.
